Jacob Abernethy was a math undergrad at MIT,  finished a PhD at UC Berkeley in Computer Science in 2011 and did a postdoc at UPenn in 2013. Abernethy has been assistant professor at UM for the last 3 years and his research area is primarily Machine Learning.
