Ava Medina
Ava Medina manages Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina’s enterprise strategy for sustainability and community resilience. Her role encompasses all aspects of sustainability, from environmental to social impact.
In her first year on the job, Medina calculated its first carbon footprint and collaborated across the company to create an enterprise dashboard that tracks progress on social responsibility initiatives.
Prior to joining the health insurer in May 2024, Medina worked on net-zero strategy at Citi. In 2023, she led Citi’s global purchase of renewable electricity credits, securing over 1,000 megawatt-hours of “green electricity” for over 100 countries to maintain the financial institution’s 100 percent renewable electricity goal. Medina also procured carbon credits to match Citi’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions, retiring over 46,000 credits.
Medina began her career as a renewable energy scientist and later worked with the National Institutes of Health, indexing climate change, infectious disease and human health data. She has undergraduate degrees in quantitative energy systems and Mandarin Chinese.
