Jaden Barney
Jaden Barney, a mechanical engineer and senior sustainability analyst at Legrand, a French industrial company, developed the Legrand “eco-design process,” a systematic and data-driven approach introduced in January 2025 that integrates sustainability goals into new product design.
Her work alongside Legrand’s engineers and product managers is reducing emissions and energy use, improving repairability and eliminating single-use plastic packaging for approximately 80 new products developed each year. The eco-design “index” formalized as part of the new process will shape Legrand’s roadmap from 2025 to 2027. Barney is also a subject matter expert for shared design challenges, like eliminating single-use plastic packaging.
Barney’s experience as an iPhone design engineer at Apple informed a deep understanding of mechanical and electronic manufacturing, and how carbon footprints, repairability and other sustainability metrics can be strongly influenced in the earliest stages of development. Using this background, she created a comprehensive playbook that integrates fundamental principles of a circular economy into clear critical checkpoints for cross-functional teams.
