Candid Views of Fortune 500 Companies Regarding ISO 14001
Published by the United States-Asia Environmental Partnership, this report examines the environmental and supply chain management systems of global firms, including the impact of ISO 14001. It finds that most of these firms’ environmental management systems exceed ISO 14001 standards, though firms value the standard as a tool for identifying EMS improvements. Most Fortune 500 companies are less interested in taking the formal step of ISO 14001 certification, although the prevailing feeling is that certification will become a prerequisite among customers and stakeholders for market success. The report also considers whether the standard is a consideration for suppliers seeking to do business with global firms, and discusses “greening” the supply chain. The annex provides interview responses of environmental managers and directors from 30 manufacturing companies in the U.S. and Asia.
