CDP 2010 Global 500 Report

This report analyzes the CDP responses from the 500 largest public companies on the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (Global 500), with particular attention paid to the ways that organizations in every sector are capitalizing on commercial opportunites, particularly those from reducing emissions.
The 2010 response rate was high — 82 percent, which is impressive considering a climate of economic downturn and policy uncertainty. It sends a strong message from the world’s largest companies that climate change remains on the business agenda and requires attention and allocation of resources.
The CDP responses suggest a shift in emphasis from a risk-based approach to one that also embraces uncertainty. Nearly nine out of 10 companies disclosed significant opportunities, compared to eight out of 10 reporting one or more significant risks.
Nearly half of Global 500 companies were listed on the CDP’s new Carbon Performance Leadership Index, while the average score of the existing Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index rose significantly to 91 in 2010 from 84 in 2009.
