Choose Green Report: Alternative Fiber Papers
April/May 1998
Green Seal presents “tree free” papers as an option for businesses, recognizing that these papers “may not meet all of your needs” but that “by choosing to switch at least some of your office paper to even a partially tree-free paper, you can help reduce the square mileage of forests felled each year.” Tree-free papers examined stem from bamboo, kenaf, hemp, agricultural by-products, cotton (including recovered cotton), and flax. For each, Green Seal reviews the paper-making process, pulp content, location of growth and processing, transportation methods, and availability. The result is reams of data: a list of 23 recommended papers, all of which work in high-speed photocopiers, plain paper fax machines, inkjet printers, and laser printers. Paper company phone numbers are provided.
