Energy Efficiency and Investor Returns
The U.S. EPA’s Energy Star program commissioned two studies to examine the link between energy management and stock value in two sectors: real estate and retail food. The studies, conducted by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, analyzed relative energy-efficiency and energy-management performance in the real estate sector. They found that “leaders in energy management achieved superior stock market and financial performance.” The benefits cited by Innovest include reduced cost, increased profitability and sales, reduced regulatory exposure, reduced vulnerability to energy price fluctuations, enhanced image and reputation, and enhanced appeal to socially responsible investors.
