Living Planet 2000
The Living Planet Report is an annual update on the state of the world’s natural ecosystems and the human pressures upon them. The report includes the Living Planet Index (LPI), an indicator of the changing state of the earth’s natural forest, freshwater and marine ecosystems. The report also presents data on the Ecological Footprint, a measure of the changing human pressures on the natural environment over time, and compares how these pressures vary between countries. The 2000 report shows that the LPI has declined by about 33% since 1970 while humanity’s Ecological Footprint on the earth has increased by about 50% over the same period, exceeding the biosphere’s capacity to regenerate.
