Nike SmartWay Transport Partner
The SmartWay Transport Partnership is an innovative government program that encourages and supports company efforts to reduce greenhouse gases caused by shipping goods. The EPA provides participants with benefits and services that include fleet management tools, technical support, information, and public recognition. The program will result in companies improving their energy efficiency, saving money, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.
As part of the program, Nike is developing a long-term plan to reduce emissions that will be complete in 2005. The company has established a set of short- and mid-term goals, including the following:
- Reduce GHG emissions from Nike-owned facilities larger than 20,000 sq. ft. (1860 m2) and business air travel by 13% below 1998 levels by the end of 2005. Nike will purchase energy-efficiency offsets to mitigate the impact of business travel to reach the reduction goal.
- Determine baselines for GHG emissions from footwear and apparel contracted manufacturing facilities. Nike will engage in pilot programs, explore best management practices, and take steps necessary to create a benchmark impact and then a long-term reductions plan by the end of 2005.
- Determine baselines for our GHG emissions from logistics encompassing the movement of finished products to customer warehouses.
