Brian London

President
Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association; Whitehouse and Schapiro
Brian London serves as President of SMART, the international trade association representing the for-profit textile reuse and recycling industry. SMART advocates for high standards and best practices in the collection, processing, and repurposing of used clothing, wiping materials, and related secondary textiles while providing networking, education, and advocacy platforms for its members worldwide. Under London’s leadership, SMART has expanded its international reach and emerged as a leading voice on critical policy issues, engaging legislators, regulators, and global stakeholders to ensure that evidence-based policy supports the circular systems that keep billions of garments in use and sustain millions of livelihoods.

The organization works tirelessly to advance sustainability and circularity in global textile markets while defending the industry against well-intentioned but misguided regulatory proposals that would dismantle functioning reuse economies.

In his day job, Brian runs one of North America’s largest buyers, sorters, and exporters of post-consumer textiles. Whitehouse & Schapiro moves more than 250 million pounds of used clothing and textiles a year to global reuse markets, repurposers and fiber markets with warehouses in Baltimore, St. Louis, Miami, San Jose, Costa Rica and recently with a Southern California expansion.

A Baltimore native, Brian holds degrees in Mathematics and Comparative Literature from Cornell and an MD from Weill Cornell Medical College before returning to the family business: a fifth-generation continuation of a story that started in 1907.
