Jeff Hansen is a visionary leader in industrial decarbonization, currently serving as Vice President of Environmental Sustainability at Steel Dynamics Inc., the second largest steelmaker in the USA by market capitalization. With over 30 years of experience in manufacturing, including 17 years building and developing alternative ironmaking technologies, Jeff has built a reputation for driving transformative change.
Jeff has overall responsibility for developing and implementing decarbonization strategies at Steel Dynamics. Jeff was most recently involved in launching SDI Biocarbon Solutions, a first-of-its-kind facility that replaces fossil-based anthracite coal with sustainably sourced biocarbon produced from the high temperature pyrolysis of woody biomass —cutting Scope 1 emissions by up to 35%.
Jeff also chairs the Global Steel Climate Council, where he helped architect the Steel Climate Standard—a global framework for emissions transparency in steel production
Beyond technical innovation, Jeff is deeply committed to workforce safety, talent development, and community engagement. Jeff was intimately involved in developing SDI’s “Take Control of Safety” program. He also co-founded the Northeast Indiana FAME chapter as well as SDI’s company-wide talent development program.
