After nearly a decade of skateboarding, John Magana took an unexpected turn and joined the U.S. Coast Guard, planning to pursue a career as an Aviation Technician. During a mandatory flight physical, doctors discovered a lifelong, undiagnosed heart condition — a revelation that led to open-heart surgery and completely reshaped his life. Six years later, John has rebuilt himself both physically and mentally. He is now a dedicated skateboarding instructor, Boston-qualifying marathon runner, ultramarathoner, student, and veteran. Through his journey of perseverance, balance, and passion, John shares how skateboarding, personal growth, and embracing change can inspire us to move forward — both individually and collectively.
