Holly Kaufman

Holly is a seasoned sustainability leader, with expertise in climate change, energy, waste elimination, and ecological services. She provides strategic guidance to such organizations as the Union of Concerned Scientists, the California Wind Energy Association, the World Economic Forum, Hewlett Packard, Conoco, Proctor & Gamble, and the Natural Resources Defense Council. She managed the climate change & national security portfolio at the Department of Defense as a President Clinton appointee, and developed diplomatic strategy for UN climate treaty negotiations at the State Department, receiving a Superior Team Honor Award. She also served at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, where she wrote the President's report to Congress on environmental trends, and on the climate and energy team at the Clinton Global Initiative.Holly’s current focus is the nexus between climate change and plastic. She presented recommendations to the InterAction Council (former heads of state including Gro Harlem Brundtland and Oscar Arias), and was a mentor on the Closed Loop Partners/IDEO “Next Gen” cup challenge for Starbucks and McDonalds. She developed material recovery facilities for Norcal, Inc., and worked at the first municipal composting site in the US. Holly served as Executive Director of an international ecological research network for the National Academy of Sciences, and Deputy Director of a renewable energy NGO. She taught ecological agriculture at the UC Berkeley and the California Academy of Sciences. Public service work includes serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ energy efficiency committee, as the mayor’s appointee overseeing green bonds at the city’s Public Utility Commission, and on the advisory councils of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and Carbon180.
