According to the recently released Sustainability Leaders 2024 Survey, sustainability experts worldwide have identified sustainability integration and demonstrating real impacts and actions as the top two criteria for a company to be recognized as a sustainability leader. This year, there has been a significant increase in the number of experts placing importance on the supply chain, which is now ranked third among the drivers of recognized leadership. These drivers are consistently in the top three across almost all sectors and regions surveyed.

Experts also mention the importance of setting aspirational targets and goals, focusing on more sustainable products and services, and demonstrating commitment, leadership, purpose and innovation.

The annual GlobeScan / ERM Sustainability Institute Leaders Survey captures the perspectives of almost 500 sustainability experts in 65 countries worldwide on the priorities and forces shaping the sustainable development agenda. The survey explores sustainability leadership across governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and companies, and tracks priority issues and the most important recent developments.

What does this mean?

Setting ambitious targets and demonstrating commitment and leadership are no longer sufficient. Companies need to push business strategy integration further, demonstrate tangible impact and results, and address their supply chain issues from Scope 3 emissions to human rights head-on if they want to be recognized as sustainability leaders.
