Developers and designers with an eye on earning a LEED certification can now access the Innovation & Design Credit Catalog online.
The catalog contains a listing of proven green building strategies that have been successful on previous LEED-certified projects. The Innovation & Design credits are awarded for strategies that deliver environmental benefits but aren’t specifically addressed in the current LEED rating system.
Projects currently can earn points for two types of credits in this category — exemplary performance and innovative performance. The USGBC recommends designers use the catalog as a brainstorming tool.
For instance, a cogeneration plant that offers savings in heating and chilled water is listed, as well as use of halogen-free electrical equipment with no toxicity, flammability or cadmium.
“The Innovation & Design credit category inspires new ideas and solutions that yield environmental benefits,” said Brendan Owens, USGBC’s vice president of LEED technical development. “By publishing the catalog of credits online, we hope to inspire further breakthroughs in the green building industry.”
