Eastman Earns Cradle to Cradle Certification for 10 Polymers

McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry has given Cradle to Cradle Silver certification to 10 of Eastman Chemical Company's polymers, which are used in a variety of applications like pens, toys, plastic bottles and shrink wrap. Read More

Ten polymers developed by Eastman Chemical Company have received Cradle to Cradle (C2C) silver certification. The materials are used in a wide range of products and industries, including architecture, design and construction.

The polymers were recognized for being 100 percent recyclable, as well as having low toxicity and hazard potential. The C2C certification process, administered by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), looks at the materials that products are made of, what can be done with them when they’re disposed of, energy and water use, and companies’ social responsibility strategies.

The certified materials are Eastman’s Cadence, Eastar, Ecdel, Embrace, Lenstar, MedStar, Neostar, ParaStar, Provista, Spectar and TiGlaze products.

The Eastar copolyesters, for example, are used to make pen caps, pen barrels, toys, sporting goods and many more items. The ParaStar resins are a form of PET plastic that can be made thinner and lighter than other PET plastics. And Embrace resins are used to make shrink films that are compatible with modern recycling infrastructure.

Three Eastman products also were named Cradle to Cradle Approved Ingredients. The Approved Ingredients designation is for materials that will be sold as intermediate goods to other businesses or manufacturers, while C2C certification is for finished goods.

Approved Ingredients meet the standards of the C2C gold and platinum levels of certification. The three Approved Ingredients are Eastman SB038-75AA Provista UV Stabilizer, Eastman Copolyester Additive CO256 and Eastman Copolyester Color Concentrate COO22.
