HP, IBM and Cisco are the world’s top three vendors for green data center products, according to a new report from ABI Research.

ABI’s “Green Data Center Vendor Matrix” study looks at companies’ internal and external efforts to boost energy efficiency and environmental performance of data center hardware and software.

All told, the ranking puts HP in the top position for its extensive carbon goals, which the report identifies as “perhaps the most extensive” out of any of the companies it studied. Similarly, IBM and Cisco ranked above the 90th percentile for both innovation and implementation, with IBM’s Project Big Green is singled out for its effectiveness.

“IBM’s intellectual property is unmatched by any vendor,” the report states. “The company’s chilled water cooling technology gives it a good green story to tell, and its services related to environmental controls are the most comprehensive of the top three vendors.”

Although Cisco’s narrower focus on network switches limits the potential scope of its green initiatives and puts it at a slight disadvantage over IBM and HP, the company scored third-highest overall for its virtualization tools and VFrame data center management software.

The top seven green data center vendors, according to ABI Research, are: HP, IBM, Cisco, Dell, Sun, Rackable Systems, and Huawei Technologies.
