The International Organization for Standardization has developed a new standard aimed at sustainable building.
ISO 21930:2007 focuses on environmental declarations of building products and takes into consideration the entire life cycle of a building.
The building construction industry accounts for a large amount of waste worldwide, and in European countries creates about 40 percent of waste, according to the ISO.
The new standard describes the principles and framework for environmental declarations of building products because those statements are what purchasers look at when deciding to use environmentally-friendly materials, the ISO said. The standard will establish uniformity and consistency in the way environmental product declarations are made.
The goal of the declaration, the ISO said, “is to encourage the demand for, and supply of, building products that cause less stress on the environment.”
