In a report set for release this week, the United Nations says that investments in green jobs can fight the dual problems of deforestation and unemployment in many areas of the world.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says that countries could create 10 million jobs related to monitoring and managing forests where lumber is harvested, creating and managing trails and recreation sites, expanding green spaces in cities, restoring degraded forests, planting new forests and improved fire management.

India, China, other Asian countries and most of Africa would benefit the most from an investment in green forestry jobs. India, South Korea and the United States are already looking at sustainable forestry as one way to combat the worldwide economic downturn.

There are already plenty of organizations encouraging sustainable forestry and providing companies and countries guidance on best forestry practices. The Forest Stewardship Council, Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Program for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification are some of the best-know programs that put their seals of approval on forests and products that come from them.
