Unilever, the parent compant of Lipton, Dove and Axe, plans to source all of its paper packaging from sustainable sources or recycled content within the next 10 years.

The company, which topped the latest Tomorrow’s Value Ratings, started reviewing its sourcing practices for paper and cardboard packaging in 2009 with the help of the Rainforest Alliance. Unilever now aims to increase the amount of sustainable-sourced paper packaging from the current level of 62 percent to 75 percent in 2015 and 100 percent in 2020.

Unilever said it will give preference to paper sources certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), calling it the most comprehensive forest management certification program in the world.

But, Unilever says that the supply of FSC-certified paper is not large or widespread enough for its needs, and it also notes that FSC certification can be hard for small forest owners to receive, so it will also accept paper from programs endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) in areas where there is no FSC paper available. However, it will require that the non-FCS programs meet its own requirements for non-controversial sources.
