GreenBiz week in review

A weekly round up of the news you need to know about.

The evolution of corporate energy

PPAs and RECs may sound like alphabet soup, but the market for corporate renewables is heating up. Energy attorney Peter Mostow explains in a piece on “Google, Walmart and corporate energy 2.0.”

For more on how companies are buying clean energy, check out the work of the Rocky Mountain Institute’s Business Renewables Center or read up on the Corporate Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles pioneered by WRI and WWF.

Sustainable cities of the future

Associate Editor Lauren Hepler talks artificial intelligence, smart cities and the explosion in urban data collection in a Q&A with Future Cities Lab co-founder Jason Kelly Johnson.

It’s all part of a bigger rush toward smart cities, public-private collaboration and “sub-national” climate action.

Talking trash

A recent New York Times piece on “The Reign of Recycling” has set off something of a firestorm in sustainability circles, with the Closed Loop Fund’s Rob Kaplan offering a pointed fact check and As You Sow’s Conrad MacKerron penning a piece titled, “You say ‘recycling is garbage?’ Trash that argument.”

The skirmish also raises much bigger questions about the future of waste, such as how zero-waste goals could become reality and the ways the circular economy craze might impact recycling.

Featured stories

An in-depth look at two stories changing the game for green business.

Sustainable space travel takes flight

What does NASA’s ambition to send astronauts to Mars have to do with sustainability on Earth? A lot, it turns out.

Executive Editor Joel Makower explains with the help of two NASA experts, including astronaut Cady Coleman, in “Can NASA’s far-out travel plans bring sustainability to Spaceship Earth?

Understanding the food tech boom

One thing is for sure: Entrepreneurs and investors have gotten the memo that the food business is ripe for new entrants — especially those with technologies that can help increase production while reducing the drain on natural resources.

The urban farming boom is one area to watch (here are 10 companies feeding that trend). Big Food is also eyeing the space with a mix of concern about new competition and interest in getting a slice of the action.
