A little more than a month after tightening its product safety requirements, Toys “R” Us has launched a new line of environmentally friendly toys marketed under its brand.

The new toys will be available for purchase beginning April 22,
which is Earth Day. The first toy lines include the Natural Wooden
Toys, Natural Cotton plush animals and Organic Cotton Dolls; new lines
will be introduced later this year.

“Going green is more than just a trend,” said Karen Dodge, the
company’s chief merchandising officer. “It’s becoming a lifestyle. This
is just our first step in offering our customers the best selection of
eco-friendly and organic products in all of our Toys”R”Us stores
nationwide.”

The Forest Stewardship Council certified the wood used in the
Natural Wooden Toys. Cotton products will be use water-based dyes. The
new toy line will sport new earth-tone packaging with a special “R”
seal that includes a green leaf and the words: recycled, renew, reuse,
rethink. The packaging is made from at least 70 percent recycled
materials.

The new toys line is being introduced at a time when several states are considering or have passed toxic toy regulations to keep lead and other harmful materials from childrens’ products.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also issued new rules
Monday requiring contractors to follow lead-free work standards when
renovating or repairing housing, child-care facilities or schools to
further protect youngsters from the toxic material.
