Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) this week announced renewed 2007 goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its manufacturing and corporate operations throughout the world.
It is the company’s seventh annual Global Climate Protection Plan. Since 2002, the company has cut normalized greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 percent.
“AMD is a leading partner in EPA’s Climate Leaders program,” said Kathleen Hogan, director of the Climate Protection Partnerships Division at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in a statement. “The results AMD has experienced by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions demonstrate the benefits possible through global climate change leadership.”
The company, which provide processing solutions in the computing, graphics and consumer electronics sectors, expanded its wafer fabrication operations in Dresden, Germany, which are powered by more highly efficient trigeneration plants, to achieve the carbon emission reductioons, the company said.
It reduced absolute perfluorocompound (PFC) emissions by more than 95 percent below 1995 levels. It bought 100 percent renewable energy for its Austin, Texas, facilities from the Austin Energy’s GreenChoice program, the company said. Efficiency improvements at its global facilities allowed AMD to lower its normalized energy consumption by nealry 40 percent.
The company’s updated goals call for the company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by another 33 percent by 2010 using 2006 levels as a baseline. AMD wants to reduce normalized energy use by 40 percent by 2010, again using 2006 levels as a baseline.
AMD said its integrated approach called for an effort to educate diverse audiences about energy efficiency. It also tried to collaborate in ways that pushed the green IT evolution forward.
“AMD’s commitment to reducing our environmental impact goes far beyond our operations and manufacturing, and takes a truly holistic approach to the way we conduct business,” said Hector Ruiz, AMD chairman and CEO, in a statement. “Our seventh annual global climate protection plan takes a measured approach to evaluate and continually improve our global environmental efficiency, from how we run our corporate facilities to how we develop products that deliver superior performance-per-watt. By focusing on energy efficiency and the environment in every sector of our business, we’ve not only reduced our environmental impact, we are leading the world to energy-efficient processing from handhelds to the datacenter.”
