Biotech company Genecor has started transferring BioIsoprene to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., taking the companies a step further in developing rubber with bio-based chemicals.
BioIsoprene is meant to be a substitute for petrochemical-based isoprene, a major chemical use in producing synthetic rubber. Genecor and Goodyear announced they were teaming up to research and produce bio-based isoprene in September 2008, and this month Genecor made its first delivery of the product to Goodyear.
Along with being used to make rubber for tires, isoprene is used to produce a variety of items, including surgical gloves, adhesives and golf balls.
The companies aim to commission a large-scale manufacturing plan for BioIsoprene by 2012 and make it commercially available by 2013.
