Wal-Mart Canada has launched a new recycling program, collecting expanded polystyrene packaging and sending it to be turned into insulation.
Grace Canada, a specialty construction materials company, will collect the waste packaging from eight Wal-Mart locations, including the company’s home office, in southern Ontario and reuse it in the production of fire-resistant commercial insulation.
“As we work with our merchandise suppliers long-term to eliminate the polystyrene used in products and packaging, we’re also looking at interim solutions to divert this waste from landfill,” said John Lawrence, director of corporate social responsibility for Wal-Mart Canada.
Grace Canada began recycling polystyrene in 1997 at three plants, including at the Ajax, Ontario, plant where Wal-Mart’s polystyrene will be recycled. Since the inception of its recycling program, Grace Canada has recycled 77 million pounds of polystyrene foam.
The recycling program is another step in Wal-Mart’s long-term, company-wide goal of producing zero waste.
