The Green Electronics Council has awarded Dell’s Latitude D630 laptop and Hewlett-Packard’s rp5700 desktop the Gold-level certification under the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) program, the first globally available computer products to receive that recognition.

EPEAT-registered products are designated as “bronze,” “silver” or “gold” depending on the number of environmental features they possess, including reduced levels of hazardous materials, improved energy efficiency, and ease of upgrade and recycle. The program received a major boost when President Bush signed an executive order in January requiring 95 percent of all federal agency purchases be EPEAT-certified.

“Customers increasingly value environmental aspects of products, such as energy efficiency, provisions for reuse and recycling, and materials innovation,” said Jeff Omelchuck, executive director of the Green Electronics Council, which manages the EPEAT program. Omelchuck congratulated both Dell and HP on making some of the most environmentally preferable products in the industry.

EPEAT categorizes electronics products under the following categories to help consumers evaluate and compare based on their environmental impact:

  • Reduction/elimination of environmentally sensitive materials
  • Materials selection
  • Design for end of life
  • Product longevity/life cycle extension
  • Energy conservation
  • End of life management
  • Corporate performance
  • Packaging

Products meeting or exceeding each of the 23 required criteria are recognized as EPEAT Bronze. Products meeting all required criteria and at least 50 percent of the tool’s optional criteria are recognized as EPEAT Silver. Products meeting all required criteria and at least 75 percent of the optional criteria are recognized as EPEAT Gold.
