As part of the company’s commitment to environmental excellence, Johnson & Johnson recognized 14 of its companies, facilities, teams and individuals that have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving the Corporation’s Environmental Strategic Vision.

The Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Environmental Excellence Awards, now in their fourth year, honor exceptional achievement in the fields of Performance, Innovation and Leadership. A jury comprised of Johnson & Johnson employees and experts from external environmental organizations choose the award recipients from among more than 50 applicants worldwide. A donation is made in the name of the honorees to the non-profit environmental group of their choice.

The programs are just a few of the company-wide environmental initiatives that helped Johnson & Johnson avoid the emission of 214 million kilograms of CO2 and the use of 1.8 million cubic meters of water during 2003. The company also saw decreases in the amount of hazardous non-product output (28% decrease) and toxic non-product output (18% decrease) compared to 2002.

Among the honored programs:

  • The Janssen Pharmaceutica N.V. chemical production site in Geel, Belgium, is the largest within the worldwide chemical production organization supporting Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical companies and has long been committed to environmental care. In June 2003 the facility earned Johnson & Johnson’s highest environmental assessment score of “five” in addition to its previous ISO 14001 certification. The facility’s community outreach plan has resulted in the construction of an odor removal unit at the wastewater treatment plant. Schools regularly tour the site and lectures are given.
  • Johnson & Johnson (Thailand) Ltd., located in Bangkok, achieved a “four” Environmental Assessment rating in 2003, up from “three” the previous year. The facility completed installation of its photovoltaic cell — a solar system that conserves energy and indirectly reduces carbon dioxide by approximately 60,000 kilograms per year. Additionally, Johnson & Johnson (Thailand) has implemented projects to address raw material and packaging usage, resulting in the avoidance of 6% for raw material and of 15% for packaging.
  • Despite strong growth during the past few years, Johnson & Johnson Medical (China) Ltd., has remained focused on environmental issues, recently obtaining a rating of “four” on its Environmental Assessment. Additionally, the facility has had no regulatory issues and no regulatory or Johnson & Johnson non-compliance issues since it was established in 1996. The local Environment Protection Bureau has twice recognized Johnson & Johnson Medical (China) as a Model Unit for its contribution to local environment protection, including the facility’s wastewater chemical oxygen demand discharge initiative. This program exceeds both Johnson & Johnson and local requirements for testing frequency and wastewater discharge levels.
  • Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C., located in La Jolla, Calif., has designed and installed the first Johnson & Johnson cogeneration system that can self-produce electrical power for the entire site. The 2,200-kilowatt unit is the first known system that allows a research facility to fully operate independent of the state’s electrical grid. The engines’ waste heat also reduces energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by powering both a 500-ton absorption chiller and building heat. The cogeneration program will reduce the site’s carbon dioxide emissions by three million pounds per year.
  • The 75-kilowatt solar electric system at the Spring House site of the Pharmaceutical Sourcing Group — Americas is the largest energy system of its kind in Pennsylvania. The system, which covers 17,500 square feet and uses sunlight to produce more than 78,000 kilowatt-hours per year, is projected to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide by 8,150 pounds, sulfur oxides by eight tons and carbon dioxide by 1,153 tons over the 25-year life of the unit.

The Environmental Excellence Awards serve to reflect on the hard work, commitment and innovations of Johnson & Johnson companies, facilities, teams and individuals worldwide. The recipients are chosen, in part, based upon the program’s “reproducibility” at other company locations, and these model initiatives provide inspiration and ideas for future environmentally sound projects throughout Johnson & Johnson.
