A new partnership aims to help small businesses in the Wales tourism industry get a grip on their water woes.

The initiative, launched in late August, helps hotels, bed and breakfasts, and self catering establishments become more water efficient, cut the costs of their water bills, and help them do their part to protect the water environment.

Project participants receive a free water audit to help zero in on ways to achieve these savings; water-efficient appliances will replace fittings and be monitored to establish their water saving potential – or in other words, fix exactly how much water has been slipping through hoteliers’ fingers.

It’s all part of a program launched by Environment Agency Wales, The BOC Foundation, Wales Tourist Board and Corus. The effort is managed by Mandix Consultants.

Evantually, the project will produce detailed case studies, guidelines, and best practice information to help other establishments benefit from water and money savings, according to the Environment Agency.

According to Nicola Thomas, Demand Management Coordinator, Environment Agency Wales, high summer demands linked to tourism prompted the effort.

“Such high demands put additional stresses on the environment to provide the extra water during these periods — and in some cases present supplies will not be able to match the demands predicted for the future. We need to be able to meet the needs of tourism without damaging our environment,” Thomas said.

The project is supported by Corus as part of the group’s strategy for the “City of Tomorrow,” a project to promote sustainable development. According to organizers, this strategy aims to improve water demand management and lessons learned from hotels in Wales to help Corus to develop products and services for hotels worldwide.
